Ms. Rungphech “Rose” Chitanuwat, Informa Market’s Regional Portfolio Director for ASEAN expressed her gratitude to the DA and to their partners for the return of the show, which is held every two years. “This show is a combined effort of the government, led by the DA, and the private sector courtesy of our exhibitors and industry partners. The last edition of the show was in 2017 and ASF has caused the show to be postponed in 2019 and subsequently with COVID19. After five years, we are excited for the show’s comeback because there are a lot of investors who are interested in the Philippines as the country gears up for post-pandemic recovery,” she said. In addition to the local guests, Ms. Chitanuwat anticipates that at least 10,000 guests from the US, Korea, Singapore, Denmark, and other countries will attend the event since they are eager to return due to the cancellation of the 2019 edition. “This year, we will be joined by 250 local and international exhibitors, and that for sure, will gather industry players from across the Philippines and around the world. And this would not have happened without the cooperation of the DA and our partners,” she said.
Ms. Chitanuwat also called on the farming community, particularly in the ASEAN, to unite amidst the challenges. “ASEAN is an agricultural region and we need to come together so we can continually produce food. A lot has happened in two years—the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, natural calamities, rising oil prices, and food commodities. In order to overcome these challenges, the ASEAN should combine its resources and efforts so we can ensure that our agriculture industry remains sustainable. Livestock Philippines will be the ideal venue to come up with new ideas to address these concerns. Our networking activities will help us connect not only with our prospective clients but establish lifetime opportunities so we can guarantee that food production will continue no matter what the circumstances,” she said.

Poultry is one of the fastest-growing segments of the agricultural sector in India today. As crop production alone may not solve the food difficulty of the fast-growing population of the country. Poultry production has been the appropriate answer for the fulfilment of the requirements of a balanced diet. India is now the world’s third-largest egg producer, fourth-largest producer of chicken, and fifth in poultry meat production.
Poultry wastes are posing serious environmental pollution problems, through their bad odours and attract fly and rodent breeding. The appropriate utilization of its waste or by-products increases the monetary output and protects from its unwanted side effects. Inadequate approach and carelessness in the disposal of poultry litter waste will lead to the constant threat of disease ailments on poultry farms. This results in direct losses in the form of mortality and reduced productivity. Therefore, early disposal of wastes with a well-organized method is an important poultry waste management tool for raising healthy and profitable poultry farming activity. Generally, a poultry farm owner takes the litter and dumps it somewhere far away. It emits odorous gases, causing a nuisance for the surrounding neighbourhood.
The NGT has directed Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to revisit the guidelines for classifying the poultry farms as green category. Poultry production is associated with a variety of environmental pollutants, including oxygen-demanding substance, ammonia, and solids, and it attracts flies, rodents, dogs, and other pests that create local nuisances and carries diseases.
Poultry Litter
An appropriate method to dispose of/management of waste is required for minimizing the risk and fetching a better advantage for the poultry industry. There are different techniques of management and disposal of poultry waste, to reutilize the nutrition and avoid the risk.
In this article, we will be discussing how to utilize poultry litter to produce natural energy/ biogas and nutrient-rich manure.
Biogas is an environmentally friendly and one of the most efficient and effective options for renewable energy among various other alternative sources. Biogas is produced by the bio methanation process, and the effluent from the process is rich in essential nutrients that can be utilized as a very good fertilizer. Biomethation is the degradation of organic materials by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. It is a multi-step biological process in which organic carbon is converted mostly to carbon dioxide and methane.
The gas produced from the Biomethation of the poultry litter can be used in different aspects viz.,
Biogas used for cooking
A Biogas Unit
As the price of conventional cooking gas (LPG), is constantly increasing and becoming unaffordable for the major population, The gas produced from the biogas plant can be used as an alternative and thus affordable, as the gas is produced by the digestion of poultry wastes, it is more economical and environment friendly.
Biogas to Electricity
The expenses on power used in a poultry farm are huge as they have to run boilers, and multiple numbers of fans for ventilation purposes, the major expenses on the electricity can be reduced by converting the biogas produced to electricity by installing a biogas Genset.
Biogas as CBG
If the biogas produced from the poultry waste is considerably high, it can be further purified to CBG, which is equivalent to CNG and can be used in vehicles or filled in cylinders and sold to restaurants and other industries.
The black gold from the biogas plant
The slurry that is produced post the anaerobic digestion process, is considered black gold as it is very much rich in N, P, and K a very good fertilizer that can be sold to the farmers.
The electricity or the CBG produced, and the sale of organic fertilizers are the most important sources of income that are expected from the biogas system.
The technology involved in biogas production is simple and can be implemented cheaply and efficiently by employing small-scale digesters that are easy to use and maintain. These biodigesters can offer benefits to all spheres of society but are more beneficial to poultry farms. They can use the gas produced for cooking, running biogas generators, and fertilizing crops with the residual waste or sell them.
Biogas plants significantly curb the greenhouse effect: the plants lower methane emissions by capturing this harmful gas and using it as fuel. Biogas generation helps cut reliance on the use of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, the most important of its many advantages is that biogas can offer a decentralized energy solution. For instance, a poultry farm with 50,000 birds produces about 550 kWh of electricity each day. This would help farm to save around Rs. 19,25,000/- annually. In addition, and extra annual income of Rs. 11,20,000/- would be generated by selling produced organic manure.
In Advancia & Advancia Academy events, it is Adisseo’s know-how, where experts share the latest innovations and scientific knowledge with end users. As a part of Advancia Academy, Adisseo hosted two back-to-back seminars in the cities of Haryana (Jind and Karnal) on July 29th and 30th, 2022 respectively.
North India is a very promising poultry-producing territory in India. This territory consists of integrated farming, commercial feed operations, breeder’s operations, and layer farming, with the increase in demand for Broiler meat and eggs either post covid or in general, getting good quality raw material is also a big challenge for Poultry Producers.
Optimizing the feed cost with the high volatility of raw material is one of the big challenges faced by all Poultry Producers. Feed formulation utilizing maximum efficacy of nutrients of raw material is an important challenge being faced by all Nutritionists. Enzymes play a very critical role to reduce the feed cost which directly helps farmers to increase their profitability. The use of the right enzymes with the right matrix values is very important. Apart from feed challenges due to weather fluctuations, Current disease outbreaks have made the market more challenging. In Breeder’s operations, either fertility or hatching egg quality is one of the most important parameters where organic trace minerals especially hydroxy Se Methionine plays an important role. Multi-mycotoxin management is also one of the important aspects these days. Gut Health is the biggest challenge, and the right probiotic impact positively on gut health.
To address the above-mentioned challenges, Adisseo organized two seminars in Jind and Karnal which included Breeder farmers, Consultants, Feed millers, Nutritionists, Layer farmers along with eminent thought leaders from Industry.
In the Jind session , our external speaker was Dr. Sudipto Haldar from AgriVet, Ph.D. (Animal Nutrition) with 22 years’ experience. He gave insights about the use of Organic Trace minerals and the key to extracting more from the progeny through parents.
Speakers
Optimum trace minerals usage, their critical levels, and their utilization in the body. Organic minerals deliver more than inorganic ones and he emphasized the role of Selenium as a safeguard against stress and how the antioxidant system modulates by dietary Selenium. Dr. Haldar emphasized that the most bioavailable form right now for Selenium is 2-hydroxy-4-methylselenobutanoic acid. Its bioavailability is 28.8% higher than that of Se Yeast. He emphasized that the Selection of the right source of Se for breeding hens is important because it is this Se that after getting transferred to the eggs provides the chick embryo to fight oxidative stress. An introduction of a new stable supplemental form of Se (HMSeBA) could be considered as the next step in improving the Se nutrition in poultry.
The second speaker, Dr. Amrita Dhara having throughout experience in the Broiler Breeder segment, commercial broilers, and hatchery operations, discussed the disease scenario in the Broiler breeder in Asia and breeding Hen Mortality and its infectious and non-infectious causes. He discussed the problems that are seen in North India Breeders like Sudden death syndrome, its prevention and control, and control measures to be taken to prevent LPAI. The session ended with a note on a quick guide to making a differential disease diagnosis.
The internal speaker was Dr. Denise Cardoso, Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from France and working as Global Scientific and Technical Manager for Antioxidant solutions. Her expertise in Minerals, specifically Selenium and their role in Breeders. She discussed the free radicals in the body system and the role of Selenium in all levels of defense. She also discussed the third-generation Pure forms and 100% bioavailability of OHSeMet as compared to Se Yeast having a bioavailability of 60%. Selisseo which is a flagship product of Adisseo has a positive effect on breeder performance and progeny enhancement. Many trial studies have been discussed in the forum about the increase in egg production, hatchability, and fertility percentage. Organic Selenium for breeders, Improved hatchability and viability of newly hatched chicks, and Possible long-term maternal effect on progeny.
For the second Advancia Academy program in Karnal, our Guest speaker was Dr. Sudipto Haldar who discussed the right way to use enzymes in feed as variability in raw materials is the biggest enemy and with the right addition of enzymes, we can blunt the variations. He discussed the in-practice matrix values which are assigned to the enzymes for the least cost feed formulation. These matrix values are generated from animal studies and are typically for calcium, phosphorus, sodium, amino acids, and energy. He also emphasized on the authenticity of these matrix values depends to a great extent on the stability of the enzyme product during the steps of feed processing.
Dr. Sudipto Haldar explained the importance of the first and second enzymes that is Phytase and Xylanase/NSPase in the feed formulation and the role of good phytase. He said that the selection of enzymes is governed by the raw materials– for example, in wheat-based diet xylanase is a must while with maize-based diets xylanase/NSPase may have tremendous effects since maize grain contains about 49% of arabinoxylans. In a maize-based diet, amylase plays a very critical role in neutralizing the negative effect of variable starch digestibility. Phytase and Xylanase complement each other. He also discussed that an enzyme matrix does not follow the simple addition theory. It is very important to understand the undigested fraction of feed and accordingly set the formulations. He emphasized the Probiotic enzyme synergism and the characteristic of the best probiotic as non-hemolytic, prevents cell toxicity, and must not possess any antibiotic-resistant genes. Nutrition acumen is very important when enzyme matrix values are applied, and an over-simplification may prove suicidal.
The Internal speaker was Dr. Marcio Ceccantini, an integral part of Adisseo for the last 21 years as Technical Support Director on Feed Digestibility and Solutions in Adisseo, France SAS. Dr. Marcio discussed the FEEDASE concept and the predictor. He discussed the Antinutritional factors present in the feed in broilers and each 1% increase in phytate decreased the feed digestibility by 0.49%. He also gives the relationship between the enzymatic response and substrate level. Dr. Marcio also discussed the key differences in arabinoses and xyloses of Cereal and Protein meals. He emphasized that by measuring the ANF better contribution from enzymes can be achieved. Adiseeo R&D team has created NIR Calibrations about wet chemistry.
Karnal event
Adisseo is an important player in the feed market for the last 25 years. Rovabio strain is 100% Adisseo patented for feed and food application. Talaromyces versatilis is a fungus and strongest genome for enzyme expression. The fermentation of Talaromyces versatilis results in the production of a complex of 19 different enzyme activities including Xylanases, B Glucanases, Debranching enzymes, Cellulases, Pectinases, Proteases, and others. In the end, Dr. Marcio advised that it is very important to understand how to improve digestibility in feed by evaluating the correct amount of nutrients, knowing ANFs and having good information about the carbohydrase being used, and understanding the combined and overall effect of enzymes. Thus, FEEDASE is the enzyme solution to improve feed digestibility by targeting an indigestible fraction of raw materials.
Dr. Sujit Kulkarni, Commercial Director- Indian subcontinent for Adisseo Animal Nutrition led the event by sharing the details of Adisseo Corporate functionality, a leader in the heart of the food chain. OVER 100 RESTAURANTS ACROSS INDIA JOIN HANDS TO CURATE SOY-FED MENUS TO INCREASE AWARENESS ABOUT HIGH-QUALITY PROTEIN
11th July 2022, Mumbai: In pursuit of educating consumers about high-quality protein food sources, Right to Protein, the nationwide public health initiative, is collaborating with over 100 restaurants to provide specially curated dishes made of high-quality poultry that is fed high protein soybean meals. Launched across 15 Indian cities, restaurant chains such as Oye Kiddan, Super Bowl, Burgrill, Sardaji Londonwale, Punjabi Nawabi, Bhookemon, Wild Wild West, Farmhouse, among others, will create the customized ‘Soy Fed’ menu that will also be available on leading food ordering apps such as Zomato and Swiggy.
“Indian consumers are increasingly looking to make healthier choices. Most of our consumers not only believe that we are what we eat but also agree that we are what our food is fed or made of! Therefore, we choose poultry that is soy fed to prepare high-quality protein meals. The tailored ‘Soy Fed’ online menu is only the next step to further enable health-conscious consumers to easily choose meals created with soymeal fed poultry,” Shreh Madan, Owner, Burgrill said.
“We have always strived to offer the most nutritious food choices for all our consumers and with this menu, we go a step ahead in helping them exercise their right to high-quality protein! We’re happy to have joined this awareness movement, which we hope will bring a radical change in how our consumers perceive food and are better equipped to make informed decisions,” said Gurmeet Kochhar, Owner, Oye Kiddan.
“It is a delight to see the Soy Fed progress from being India’s first feed label to now also being a novel menu as we continue to raise awareness about the role of soy as a sustainable source of nutrition for humans as well as animals. We remain relentless in our mission to educate people about the importance of adequate protein consumption for better health and well-being and this is yet another step in that direction”, stated Jaison John, Lead – India, US Soybean Export Council (USSEC) and Right To Protein supporter.
Soybean meal is a key protein source in the diets of livestock, poultry, and aquaculture offering a well-balanced amino acid profile, and high level of digestibility among plant-based protein sources. The complete nutritional value in soybean meals assists in maintaining the animals’ wellbeing. The ‘Soy Fed’ menu with restaurants across the country, is therefore a radical next step by Right To Protein after the earlier launch of ‘Soy Fed label’ – India’s first voluntary feed label for animal protein products – towards making consumers identify and choose quality protein food.
Right To Protein is India’s first awareness initiative to educate citizens about the importance of adequate protein consumption for better nutrition, health and wellbeing. #RightToProtein initiative aspires to build knowledge of different types of protein sources amongst Indians, especially plant protein, to meet larger nutritional goals. Right To Protein aims to develop an ecosystem of professionals to drive protein awareness and debunk myths and misconceptions about protein as a critical macro-nutrient for human health and of many protein foods sources. The ecosystem will aim to improve the production and consumption quality and consistency of both, plant and animal proteins. Right To Protein is supported by several like-minded Indian and global individuals, academicians, professionals and institutions. The initiative is open for those who would like to join and/or contribute in any capacity, including providing knowledge, technical support or as promotion partners. Optimizing gut function is key to poultry health. Probiotics and butyrate have been used in poultry nutrition for many years and understanding is growing on their beneficial actions. In this way their precise formulation and where they are delivered in the gut has been perfected. This strategy helps producers control pathogens like Salmonella, Campylobacter and Clostridium perfringens – as well as reducing reliance on antibiotics.
Gut health
The gut mucosa is the location of interactions between the host, the microbiota and external elements. It is also where absorption of nutrients and stimulation of the innate immune system takes place, along with preventing bacteria and toxins entering the bloodstream. The intestinal integrity of poultry is constantly challenged by the environment, diet and pathogens. The development and maintenance of a robust gut function depends on the composition of the gut microbiota. If the gut and the microbiota is supported, so is the health of the bird.
Modes of action
Probiotics are used as feed additives to create a healthy and resilient microbiota. Bacillus subtilis DSM 29784 (Bs29784), has been shown to be effective in protecting animals. It does this by acting on three connected lines of defence: ensuring a resilient microbiome, strengthening the gut barrier function and preserving gut integrity – as well as maintaining a reactive immune system. Probiotic solutions for poultry should be specifically designed to deliver consistency, along with optimal germination and activity in the intestine.
There is a wealth of data on the benefits of butyrate on gut health in many species. Butyrate is a central signalling molecule, which has a direct effect on the microbiota, which benefits intestinal integrity. Production of caecal butyrate only starts around 12 days of age in broilers. In poultry kept under standard conditions, the use of a precisely delivered butyrate in starter diets improved gut morphology, including villi surface area. Under challenging conditions, the differences were even more marked.
The next level
The efficacy of butyrate depends on how it is supplemented, and the formulation of the additive used. Butyrate is able to activate several physiological responses along the entire digestive tract: as several gut-associated cell types will recognize butyrate as signaling molecule or use it as energy source. To ensure this, a precise formulation that protects the product and controls release is required. Different butyrate products were compared in broilers infected with Salmonella (Figure 1). The higher the level of sustained release protection, the higher the amount of relative butyrate concentration in the caeca. Which most importantly was correlated with reduced Salmonella counts in the caecum.

Unprotected butyrate (UNP), tributyrin (TB), Precision Delivery Coated Butyrate (PDCB) and 2 experimental butyrate prototypes with a strong (prt-1) and ultra-strong (prt-2) level of protection.
To help poultry deal with constant challenges, probiotics should be fed throughout the life of the bird. In this way the immune system is supported, preventing the negative health effects of pathogens and issues such as heat stress. The microbiota determines what happens in the gut lumen and surroundings. Bs29784 produces metabolites, which in turn influence the microbiota – reducing the numbers of competitor microorganisms (Figure 2).

Synergy
To promote good health throughout the cycle a good start is essential. Feeding butyrate supports gut development to help the bird prepare for challenges. Bs29784 added to all diets provides backup protection whatever happens. The immature gut of the young bird takes a while to be able to effectively combat challenges. By feeding a probiotic it helps the bird develop a beneficial microbiota faster, which will in turn produce butyrate. However, the fastest way to get to an optimal level is to feed a superior form of butyrate.
Reducing contamination of poultry products by Salmonella and Campylobacter, is a priority for governments and retailers alike. Figure 3 shows the different points that Salmonella can infect poultry and ways that dietary intervention can protect them. Butyrate is anti-inflammatory and helps to protect the integrity of the gut, reducing translocation of pathogens. Bs29784 has a unique profile of metabolites that increase its activity, including niacin, a vitamin acting as an enzymatic co-factor. Studies have shown that it shares a receptor in the gut with butyrate. Together Bs29784 and butyrate create an environment that is much less favourable for pathogen colonisation.

Resilience throughout the cycle
It is important to understand the situation of individual producers in order to create an optimal gut health programme. There will be differences in consumer priorities, environmental and market conditions. Using additives that empower the gut throughout, and throughout the bird’s life – supports poultry health and profitable production. Working together on complementary beneficial pathways within the gut, probiotics and butyrate support gut health. Resilience from the start and throughout life results in a bird that is more able to deal with stresses no matter when they occur.
